I spent the afternoon watching some video clips for seminary
and grading assignments. I also had to set up Term 2 in the system. Everything
closes at the end of the term and I have to create a whole new online classroom
for the students. It seems a little weird to have the last unit of Term 1 in
Term 2, but who am I to tell them what to do? (As it turned out, only two of us
had this issue. The rest had Unit 9 in Term 1 where it belonged. The grading
for Unit 9 is in Term 1—it is just the actual lesson that is in the wrong
place.)
Monday we walked early at church. The elders came over when
we got home to do their wash because they don’t have a washer and dryer in
their apartment. They usually do it at a member’s home, but the dryer is broken
there. I worked on seminary most of the day. For fhe in the evening we went to
watch the leader’s son play in the city championship football game. We got a
text mid-afternoon saying the mom was fixing dinner before the game. We cut up
some vegetables for our contribution. She ended up buying pizza and wings which
was good. There was a good crowd for dinner and most went to the game. It was
really cold so I bundled up and took a blanket besides. The team won, two touchdowns
to nothing. The kids were not especially terrific and tended to bunch up a lot,
but it was interesting.
I had to drop a workbook off to the student with computer
problems. I feel so bad. Online is such a good course and he was doing so well.
It is so much easier for me to grade his work when it’s typed as well.
Tuesday I did more work on seminary. I also did some creative
mending and sewing on the last of the squares for the quilt. I was literally
sewing until we walked out the door. We went to the broadcast commemorating 100
years of Scouting in the Church. It was wonderful. There were lots of young men
participating and some very creative presentations. I was touched and very
impressed. Pres. Monson was recognized for his huge contributions to Scouting.
Someone has donated the means to create a leadership training facility and they
named it after Pres. Monson. He was obviously touched by the event. It was such
a good program and I was so glad we had attended.
Wednesday Ted took the car in to have the check engine light
checked out. They had to reprogram the computer in the car as a first step in
solving the problem. This is the third time they’ve tried to fix it. He had
been told they could deal with it when he came in again for the next oil
change, but when he called about doing a smog inspection for our car
registration, he was told they couldn’t do it with the light on so he had to
move the repairs up and get it taken care of. I had a friend pick me up to go
to the senior center with her. She cuts hair on Wednesday mornings for the men.
The women would like her to cut their hair, but she’s not willing to do that.
We visited with some ladies who were working on a puzzle so we helped with that.
I studied more in the afternoon before we went to Tohlakai
for seminary. I was so proud of one of the students. She has turned in a
notebook three weeks in a row. She has only done one day’s work in any of them,
but I am thrilled to death. She and her sister make such an effort to be there
and learn. I was pleased. Afterward we went over to the trailer to meet the new
senior couple that has arrived. The elders got moved to Tohatchi and the senior
couple took their housing from them. They are the stake president’s in-laws. The
wife is blind. That would take such courage to serve a mission here being
blind. They will be here for a year. They plan to come to our adult education
classes. That will be good.
After we returned home we ate a late dinner and made treats
for institute tomorrow night. It snowed a little in the afternoon, but we
didn’t have any problem on the roads.
Thursday we woke to a light snow on the ground and frost on
the windshield. It was really cold as well. We took all my supplies to the
church when we walked. That works well so I don’t have to make several trips
from the car when I go later. I made a soup to take for lunch. It is one of my
favorites.
Two ladies came to our quilting class. I worked on some
pieces for another lady’s quilt then pressed the squares for my quilt. I found
three squares that somehow got missed when I was sewing. I also found one
square that was missing a strip. I need to fix at least one square because one
of the strips is too short—I don’t understand it. But the squares looked really
nice once they were pressed. One lady sewed border pieces on all her quilt
squares. She has to decide what to do about her quilt since she needs to add
some pieces and is out of fabric. We’ll see. It’ll be really cute when it’s
done.
After I came home I worked on some grading for seminary. My
students all got into our online class today, once I called and reminded them
it was time. (I definitely believe in miracles.) I need to find a better way to
stay in touch. I had a gathering activity and visited a bit with one student
while we were waiting. I had another stay online after class to talk. I just
need to connect with the third girl.
After class I ate a quick bowl of soup. We’d had a call from
one of our institute students that her parents didn’t want her driving to the
stake center because of all the kids that would be on the streets. We moved
class to her home and contacted the kids we knew would be there. We then had to
go to the church to leave a note saying where we were. It was crazy. There was
an accident on the Interstate that tied up traffic. The traffic and people on
the streets was insane. There were people in costumes that had to be well into
their teenage years and we even saw one lady in costume pushing a stroller. This
is one serious holiday in Gallup. We only had two students come, but we had a
good class and we visited with the students and parents afterward while we
enjoyed Pumpkin Pudding. The streets were much quieter on the way home.
Friday my online teachers meeting was OK. There were a lot
of connection issues that took up time. We had some good discussions. I had
been asked to check out one of the features of the program and I did, but we
didn’t get to discuss it. I’ll send out the instructions and test program and
see what happens.
I did a bunch of odds and ends. I had left my Book of Mormon
at the home last night, so I’m out of my normal study habit. Ted went with the
elders to give a blessing to a lady he home teaches. After they returned, the
elders gave Ted a blessing. He had a toothache during the night and couldn’t
sleep. He says he’ll be OK, but I know he isn’t doing well.
I worked a bit on my quilt squares. Some of them need some
adjustments so they’ll be right. Fortunately, it wasn’t many.
Saturday we went to get my Book of Mormon. We called a man
who had given us the eggs at conference to see if we could come and return the
carton. He was at the Flea Market, and we were headed that way, so we met him
there. We gave him a few avocados because they really needed to be eaten, but
we forgot to bring the egg carton with us. Duh! It was fun wandering around the
Flea Market. We found three ornaments that we liked and bought. Two were made
by some Indians from the Esletta Tribe. They are Pueblo Indians from south of
Albuquerque. They looked very much like they could be Hopi or Zuni. We also
bought a bell that was Zuni. I also got a killer deal on some lotion that I
shouldn’t have bought but couldn’t resist.
In the afternoon we went to the high school to watch the
last volleyball home game of the season. It was against Bloomfield. The girls
played really well and won, but it wasn’t a slam dunk. The other team was quite
good and was challenging competition. One of my students on the team did really
well and was in all of the games. They recognized the parents between the games
and that made it go later, but it’s a nice thing to do. Then the girls threw
bags of candy into the audience. When my student came our direction she threw
one directly to us. What a girl!
